Car Won't Start, Just Clicks? Here's What It Means
You turn the key (or push the button), hear clicking, and nothing happens. The good news: the sound tells you exactly what's wrong. The fix is usually $200–$600 — not a $3,000 starter rebuild.
Rapid clicking (clackclackclack) = dead battery
Sounds like a fast tapping or machine-gun click. This is your starter solenoid trying to engage but the battery doesn't have enough current to spin the starter motor.
What to do first:
- Turn off all accessories (radio, AC, lights, phone charger).
- Try to start again. If it still rapid-clicks, jump-start it.
- Drive 30 minutes to recharge, then have the battery and alternator tested.
Cost in Austin:
- Battery test: free
- New battery installed: $189–$329 (European cars with BMS registration: $329–$499)
- Alternator (if that's the actual culprit): $450–$1,100 — full breakdown here
Single loud click (CLUNK) = bad starter or starter solenoid
One firm click, then silence. The solenoid is engaging but the starter motor isn't turning — or the contacts inside the solenoid are burned.
What to do:
- Don't keep trying. Repeated attempts can weld the contacts and turn a $400 repair into an $800 one.
- Have it diagnosed. We can usually tell starter vs solenoid in 15 minutes with a voltage drop test.
Cost in Austin:
- Starter replacement: $425–$750 (most vehicles), $850–$1,400 (European / transverse V6)
- Solenoid only (where serviceable): $185–$325
No sound at all = battery, ignition switch, or security system
Dashboard lights weak or off, no click, no crank.
Check these in order:
- Battery terminals. Wiggle them. If they move, that's your problem — $0 to tighten, $40–$80 if a clamp needs replacing.
- Battery voltage. Below 10V at rest = battery is gone, not just discharged.
- Security light flashing? Try the spare key. Some immobilizer systems lock out starts after a failed authentication.
- Brake pedal feel weird? On push-button cars, a failed brake pedal switch prevents start.
Cost in Austin:
- Terminal repair: $40–$120
- Ignition switch: $325–$575
- Immobilizer / key reprogramming: $150–$350
Clicks but engine spins slowly
Battery is dying or your ground straps are corroded. In Austin's heat, batteries last 2–3 years on average — half of cooler climates. If yours is older than 2.5 years and you're getting slow cranks, it's time.
Read why Austin heat kills batteries faster.
When to jump-start vs tow
Jump-start it: rapid clicking, weak dash lights, battery is under 4 years old, you have somewhere safe to drive afterward.
Tow it: burning smell, smoke, fuel smell, single hard clunk with no crank, repeated failed jump attempts, or you hear grinding when the starter engages.

The "30,000 to 70,000 miles" answer is useless. Here's a realistic brake pad lifespan based on how — and where — you actually drive in Austin.
A grinding sound when you brake almost always means one specific thing — and ignoring it for even a week turns a $300 job into $800+. Here's how to tell what's going on.
