Services at Austin
Finding us on North Lamar
We are at 8300 N. Lamar Blvd, Suite A102, on the North Lamar corridor in North Austin. US-183 and MoPac both put you within a few minutes, and if you are coming from Wells Branch, Tech Ridge or the Domain side it is a straight run down Lamar rather than a fight across town. There is parking on site and the service counter is inside Suite A102. Appointments are not required, though a quick call ahead means we can have a bay ready rather than working you in.
Emissions testing and registration renewal
Austin registrations fall under Travis County, which still requires an annual emissions test before you can renew — the old annual safety inspection went away in January 2025, but the emissions requirement did not. We test on-site and the result goes to the state electronically, so it is one stop instead of two. Gas vehicles roughly two to twenty-four model years old need it; brand-new vehicles, vehicles twenty-five years and older, diesels and EVs are exempt. An active check engine light is an automatic fail, so if yours is on it is worth having it diagnosed before you come in for the test.
What we work on
All makes and models, domestic and import, including European. Brakes, oil and fluid services, batteries and charging systems, air conditioning, engine and check-engine-light diagnostics, transmission work, exhaust, suspension and steering, wheel alignment, tires, scheduled maintenance, and pre-purchase inspections before you buy a used car. Written estimate before any work starts, a 12-month/12,000-mile warranty on parts and labor, and no work added without your approval.
Who we see here
This shop serves North Austin first — Allandale, Crestview, Brentwood, Wooten, North Loop and Highland — and pulls from Wells Branch, Tech Ridge, the Domain, Mueller and East Austin as well. It is mostly city driving, and city driving is hardest on the things people notice last: brakes cycling through heat in stop-and-go traffic, air conditioning working through an Austin August, and batteries that give out early because heat, not cold, is what actually kills them here.
How long your car will be here
Most routine work is same day. Oil services, batteries, brakes, air conditioning, emissions tests and check-engine-light diagnostics are the jobs we most often finish the day they arrive, and many are short enough to wait for in the lounge. Bigger work — engine, transmission, anything needing a part we do not stock — depends on parts availability, and we tell you the expected timeline when we give you the estimate rather than after. If a job is going to run longer than we first thought, you hear it from us when we find out, not when you come to collect the car.
What a visit costs, and how you find out
You find out before the work happens, in writing. We do not publish flat prices because the honest number depends on your specific vehicle — oil type and capacity, pad material and whether the rotors can be resurfaced, which refrigerant the system uses, how the engine is laid out and how much has to come off to reach the part. What is fixed is the process: the code scan, the visual inspection and the written estimate cost you nothing, nothing gets added without your approval, and the parts and labor carry a 12-month/12,000-mile warranty. If we think a repair is not worth doing on your car, we will say so.
Neighborhood driving is harder on cars than it looks
A lot of driving around this shop is genuinely short — a few minutes to the shops, a school run, a trip down Lamar and back. Mechanically that is one of the hardest duty cycles there is. The engine may never reach full operating temperature, so moisture and fuel that collect in the oil never boil off, and the battery never fully recovers from the heavy draw of starting. Central-north Austin's older street surfaces add the other half: utility cuts, patched sections and driveway transitions deliver thousands of small sharp impacts a year, which wear bushings, sway bar links and strut mounts, while parallel parking knocks alignment out without leaving a mark on the wheel. The result is that low-mileage neighborhood cars often need attention at ages their odometers do not justify.
Austin — common questions
- Do you do emissions testing in Austin?
- Yes, on site. Travis County still requires an annual emissions test before registration renewal, and we test here so it is one stop instead of two.
- Do I need an appointment?
- No, but calling ahead helps. Same-day service is often available, especially for oil services, emissions tests and diagnostics.
- Do you work on European cars?
- Yes. We service all makes and models, domestic and import, including European vehicles.
- Where exactly are you on North Lamar?
- 8300 N. Lamar Blvd, Suite A102, Austin TX 78753 — convenient to US-183, MoPac, Wells Branch and the Domain.
- Will a check engine light fail my emissions test?
- Yes, automatically — it is a state OBD rule with no exceptions. Have the underlying fault diagnosed first so you do not make the trip twice.
- What are your hours?
- Monday through Friday, 8am to 6pm. Closed Saturdays and Sundays.
- Is there a warranty on the work?
- Yes — 12 months or 12,000 miles on parts and labor, with a written estimate before any work begins.
- How long will my car be at the shop?
- Most routine jobs are same day. Oil services, batteries, brakes, A/C, emissions tests and diagnostics usually finish the day you come in, and many are short enough to wait for. Larger repairs depend on parts, and we give you the expected timeline with the written estimate.
- How much does a typical visit cost?
- It depends on the vehicle, and you get the number in writing before any work starts. We do not publish flat prices because the honest figure varies with oil type, pad material, refrigerant, and how much has to come apart. The code scan, inspection and estimate are free.
- Do you charge to diagnose a check engine light?
- Pulling the code and the visual inspection are free. If the fault needs deeper diagnostic time to isolate properly, we tell you what that costs and why before we start — you will not find it on the bill as a surprise.
- Can I wait while you work on my car?
- Yes, for shorter jobs. There is a customer lounge at the shop, and oil services, emissions tests, batteries and most brake work are usually quick enough to wait for. For longer repairs most people drop the car off.
- Are you a good shop for a European car?
- Yes. Total Auto Works services all makes including European vehicles, and the shop comes from the team behind Luxury Auto Works, which specializes in European and luxury marques in Austin. If a job genuinely belongs at the specialist shop, we will tell you that.
