Check Engine Light Diagnostics in Round Rock, TX

Don't ignore a check engine light — and don't take it to a place that just clears the code and sends you home. Our Round Rock shop runs real diagnostics with OEM-level scan tools, then explains the problem in plain English with a written estimate.

    Why drivers choose us

Our diagnostic fee is often credited back when you proceed with the repair. We tell you what's wrong, what it'll cost, and what's optional vs. urgent. No guessing, no parts-cannon repairs.

    Convenient for Round Rock drivers

Williamson County emissions requirements apply to Round Rock, Cedar Park, and Georgetown drivers. A check engine light = automatic emissions failure. We'll get it diagnosed, fixed, and verified before your registration renewal.

A code tells you where to look, not what to replace

The free scan at a parts counter reads a fault code and hands you a part name. That is not what the code means. A code identifies a circuit or a system that reported a value outside its expected range — it does not identify which component caused it. The same oxygen sensor code can come from a failing sensor, a vacuum leak upstream, an exhaust leak, or damaged wiring, and only one of those is fixed by buying an oxygen sensor. Replacing parts off a code alone is how people spend real money and still have the light on. Diagnosis means testing the circuit and confirming the cause before anything gets replaced.

What the process actually looks like

We pull all stored and pending codes along with freeze-frame data, which captures the conditions when the fault occurred and is often more useful than the code itself. From there it is live data, targeted testing of the circuit involved, and physical inspection. Intermittent faults are the hardest and the most honest thing we can tell you is that they sometimes need the vehicle to misbehave again before they can be pinned down. When we have the cause, you get it explained in plain terms with a written estimate before any repair begins — and if the finding is that nothing needs replacing, that is the finding.

The check engine light and your registration

This matters more here than in most places. Round Rock registrations fall under Williamson County, which still requires an annual emissions test, and an active check engine light is an automatic fail under the state's OBD rules with no exceptions. Clearing the code just before the test does not work either — the vehicle's monitors need to complete a drive cycle before it can pass, and a recently cleared computer shows as not ready. If your renewal is coming up and the light is on, deal with the underlying fault with enough runway to complete the drive cycle. We do emissions testing on site, so the diagnosis and the test can happen in the same place.

What to tell us when you book

Diagnosis goes faster and costs less when we start with good information, and you have information no scan tool can produce. When does it happen — cold start, after twenty minutes, only in the rain, only under acceleration? Is it constant or intermittent? Has anything been replaced recently, by anyone? Has the battery been disconnected or the code cleared, and if so when? That last one matters more than people expect, because clearing the computer wipes freeze-frame data that would otherwise tell us exactly what conditions the fault occurred under. If the problem is intermittent and you can reproduce it, say so — being able to demonstrate the fault is often the single fastest route to finding it.

    Diagnostics FAQs

Why do you charge for diagnosis when the parts store scans for free?

The scan reads a code, which takes seconds. Diagnosis determines which component actually caused it, which takes testing. You are paying for the second thing, and it is what stops you buying parts you did not need.

Will a check engine light fail my emissions test?

Yes, automatically, under state OBD rules. There is no discretion on this.

Can I just clear the code before the test?

No. Clearing the computer resets the readiness monitors, and a vehicle that is not ready cannot pass. It also does not fix the underlying fault, which will return.

My light came on and then went off by itself. Should I still come in?

Worth checking. The code is usually still stored as history, and an intermittent fault that clears itself often comes back at a less convenient moment.

    How long does diagnosis take?

It varies with the fault. Straightforward ones are quick; intermittent electrical faults take longer because they have to be caught in the act. We will tell you where yours is likely to sit.

Do you do emissions testing here too?

Yes, on site at our Louis Henna Blvd shop, so a diagnosis and a test can be handled in one visit.
