A code tells you where to look, not what to replace

A code identifies a circuit or a system that reported a value outside its expected range — it does not identify which component caused it. The same oxygen sensor code can come from a failing sensor, a vacuum leak upstream, an exhaust leak, or damaged wiring, and only one of those is fixed by buying an oxygen sensor. Replacing parts off a code alone is how people spend real money and still have the light on. Diagnosis means testing the circuit and confirming the cause before anything gets replaced.

What the process actually looks like

We pull all stored and pending codes along with freeze-frame data, which captures the conditions when the fault occurred and is often more useful than the code itself. From there it is live data, targeted testing of the circuit involved, and physical inspection. Intermittent faults are the hardest and the most honest thing we can tell you is that they sometimes need the vehicle to misbehave again before they can be pinned down. When we have the cause, you get it explained in plain terms with a written estimate before any repair begins — and if the finding is that nothing needs replacing, that is the finding.

The check engine light and your registration

This matters more here than in most places. Round Rock registrations fall under Williamson County, which still requires an annual emissions test, and an active check engine light is an automatic fail under the state's OBD rules with no exceptions. Clearing the code just before the test does not work either — the vehicle's monitors need to complete a drive cycle before it can pass, and a recently cleared computer shows as not ready. Has the battery been disconnected or the code cleared, and if so when? That last one matters more than people expect, because clearing the computer wipes freeze-frame data that would otherwise tell us exactly what conditions the fault occurred under. If the problem is intermittent and you can reproduce it, say so — being able to demonstrate the fault is often the single fastest route to finding it.
