What you are actually buying
A pre-purchase inspection is not a verdict on whether a car is good. It is a costed list of what the vehicle will need over the next year or so, which lets you decide whether to walk away, negotiate, or proceed knowing what you are taking on. Almost every used car has something. The useful question is whether the something is a modest item or a major one, and whether it is due immediately or eventually. A written condition report converts a negotiation from opinion into fact, and that is usually worth considerably more than the inspection costs.
What a proper inspection covers
The vehicle goes on a lift, because most of what matters is underneath and invisible from the driver's seat. Fluid condition and leaks, brake and tire life measured rather than estimated, suspension and steering wear, exhaust and undercarriage corrosion, belts and hoses, battery and charging health, and a scan for stored and pending fault codes — including evidence that codes were recently cleared, which is itself informative. Physical signs of previous accident repair such as panel gaps, overspray and replaced components are noted. A history report tells you what was reported; a lift tells you what was not.
Timing and access make the difference
Arrange the inspection before agreeing a price rather than after — the findings are your negotiating position and lose most of their force once you have shaken hands. A dealer will normally permit an independent inspection, and reluctance is itself information worth weighing. Private sellers are often more flexible on timing but less prepared for what turns up. Bring the listing or the VIN so we know what the vehicle is supposed to be, and mention anything the seller has already disclosed, because a disclosed repair that turns out to be something else is worth knowing about.
