Used Car Pre-Purchase Inspection in Austin, TX

Buying a used car in Austin? Don't sign anything until we look at it. Our 150-point pre-purchase inspection at our N. Lamar shop catches the expensive problems sellers hide — frame damage, leaking head gaskets, transmission shudder, deferred maintenance, accident history.

    Why drivers choose us

We're independent — no relationship with the seller, no dealer kickbacks. You get an honest, written report with photos: what's good, what needs attention soon, and what's a deal-breaker. Same-day turnaround, one flat fee quoted up front, often saves buyers thousands.

    Convenient for Austin drivers

Common drop-off scenario: buyer meets us at the shop with the seller following, we do the inspection in 60–90 minutes, buyer walks out with a clear go/no-go. We work with Austin-area private sellers, CarMax, Carvana, and independent dealers daily.

Buying used in a city market

Austin's used market moves quickly and a lot of it is private-party, which puts more of the diligence on the buyer than a dealer purchase does. An inspection converts the conversation from impressions to facts: what the car needs, roughly when, and therefore what it is worth to you. Arrange it before agreeing a price rather than after — findings are a negotiating position and lose most of their force once you have shaken hands. If a seller is unwilling to allow an independent inspection, that reluctance is information in its own right.

    What city miles leave behind

Vehicles that have spent their lives in stop-and-go traffic show a characteristic pattern, and knowing it helps interpret what we find. Brakes wear ahead of tires. Air conditioning systems have worked hard and often show it. Batteries are frequently near the end of their life because short trips never fully recharged them. Suspension bushings and top mounts take repeated small impacts from patched streets and driveway transitions. Automatic transmissions in heavy traffic run hotter than the same unit on a highway. None of these necessarily argue against a car — they argue about price.

    What the inspection covers

The vehicle goes on a lift, because the things that cost real money are underneath and invisible from the driver's seat. Fluid condition and leaks, brake and tire life measured rather than estimated, suspension and steering wear, exhaust and undercarriage corrosion, belts and hoses, battery and charging health, and a scan for stored and pending fault codes including evidence codes were recently cleared. Physical signs of previous accident repair — panel gaps, overspray, replaced components — are noted. A history report tells you what was reported; a lift tells you what was not.

    Making it work logistically

We are on N. Lamar in Suite A102, which is a manageable meeting point for most of central and north Austin. Bring the listing or the VIN so we know what the vehicle is supposed to be, and tell us anything the seller has disclosed — a disclosed repair that turns out to be something else is worth knowing. Allow enough time; a rushed inspection is not worth paying for. And build in a day or two of margin, because a seller pressing you to decide immediately is applying pressure for a reason.

    What we cannot tell you

An inspection is a snapshot of condition, not a guarantee about the future, and any shop implying otherwise is overselling. We can tell you what is worn, what is leaking, what codes are stored and what physical evidence of past repair exists. We cannot predict a component that fails without warning, verify service history beyond what the vehicle itself shows, or confirm mileage authenticity. We also cannot tell you whether the price is fair — that is a market question. What we can do is make sure the condition half of your decision is based on measurement rather than impression.

    Pre-Purchase Inspections FAQs

    How long does it take?

Plan on the vehicle being with us for a meaningful part of the day. A twenty-minute look is not worth paying for.

Can you come to the seller?

We inspect here, on a lift. Seeing the underside is most of the value and cannot be done properly in a car park.

Will you tell me what it is worth?

We tell you its condition and what it needs. Valuation depends on the market, but a written condition report is the strongest position to negotiate from.

    What if the seller refuses?

Take it seriously. A seller with nothing to hide rarely has a reason to refuse an independent inspection.

Can you spot previous accident damage?

We can flag physical evidence — panel gaps, overspray, replaced components, undercarriage or structural damage — which complements a history report rather than duplicating it.

Do you inspect European and import vehicles?

Yes — all makes and models, domestic and import including European.

How soon can you fit me in? Used cars move fast in Austin.

We know, and we try to accommodate pre-purchase inspections quickly because a delay can cost you the car. Call and tell us the situation. If we genuinely cannot fit you in before your deadline we will say so rather than leaving you hoping.
